Dunkel (German for Dark) is a specialty of Bavaria, Germany. Its origin dates back to the 14th century. It was perfected by monks of the local Benedictine monasteries and is renowned in Germany and beyond. Dunkel is characterized by its smooth, full, malty flavour, mahogany brown colour and roasted aroma with a hint of dark chocolate. Under the creamy mocha-coloured head, beats a strong Munich heart of the finest malts.
It is an elegant lager, with a rich, mild vanilla, nutty-sweet palate. Coming to a dry, rounded finish. Though it looks much like a British Dark Ale or Porter, it is unlike these brews. Dunkel has a typically clean, lager taste without any fruitiness at all. Cascade hops add a touch of West Coast magic to this magnificent decoction.
